Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q:
Why are my In and out boxes empty despite there are mail in them?

A:
The reason for this is that the captions for each column in the boxes, are zero width and therefore truncated into the left margin. You can pull these out manually using your mouse, or you can remove the registry entries and let Mailcoach set new default values.

To reset registry entries:1. Stop Mailcoach2. Start the regeditor (Win95 regedit.exe, NT regedt32.exe)3. Go to: hkey_local_machine\software\ymex software\mailcoach\environment
4. Remove all entries in this folder.5. Start Mailcoach and in/out boxes are now OK again.

Q:
I cant download messages via UUCP. I get the message Authoritative answer: Host not found (11001) in my UUCP.LOG, What is wrong?

A:
The message "Authoritative answer: Host not found (11001)" is reported in the UUCP.LOG file when trying to connect to a UUCP host via TCP/IP.The error occur when a host cannot be looked up in a DNS.

There are two main causes:
1. The hostname is misspelled or does not exist. You can verify this by manually connecting to Internet and start Telnet.exe. Select your host and the port as 540. Try connect. You should get a Login prompt. If Telnet answers with the same message, you have probably not the correct hostname.
2. There is no setting for DNS in you network setup. Add IP-number to DNS, in your network setup. The number should be found in the information provided by your Internet Service Provider.

Q:
I would like to Install Mailcoach as service on Windows NT, how?

A:
Applies to Windows NT 3.51 or laterTo install Mailcoach as service you need two files from NT resource-kit,SRVANY.EXE and INSTSRV.EXE.
1. Make sure you have Mailcoach configured the way you want and working correctly.
2. Copy SRVANY.EXE and INSTSRV.EXE from your NT resource kit, to the directory where Mailcoach is installed.
3. Open a DOS windows and go to the directory where Mailcoach is installed, assuming c:\mcmain in the example..
4. At the command prompt, run these three lines:
instsrv Mailcoach c:\mcmain\srvany.exe
instsrv Pop3server c:\ mcmain\srvany.exe
instsrv SmtpServer c:\ mcmain\srvany.exe
(Adjust directory if this is different than above)
5. Close the Dos window
6. Open the Control panel - Services
7. From the list, select each of the following entries and in the following order:
Pop3Server
SmtpServer
Mailcoach
Push the Startup-button and select System account for each of the above entries.
8. Select the above items one at a time and push the Start-button. You must start all three in this order, otherwise they will not get contact with each other and as a result, some functions may not work properly
9. Your service installation is now complete and Mailcoach will automatically start each time NT is restarted

Note: Don
t install Mailcoach as service until you are certain it runs smoothly in your system. It is a lot more work to search for problems when Mailcoach runs as service.

Q:
Can I start Mailcoach as service under Windows95?

A:
Info:
When Mailcoach is running as service, you don't need to Login to Windows 95 as Mailcoach is started prior to this.Instructions:
1. Stop Mailcoach
2. Start Regedit.exe
3. Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
If the key \Runservices doesn't exist, create it.
4. Create a new value below this key, name it \Mailcoach, and set the value to: c:\ mcmain\mcmain.exe or wherever Mailcoach is installed.
5. Restart Windows95 and Mailcoach will start nicely

Q:
Is it possible for Mailcoach to start a program prior to running UUCP transport?

A:
Yes, you can run a program before and/or after a UUCP transport by specifying these on Mailcoach command line as follows:
Mcmain /PRE:file1.exe: /POST:file2.exe:

Notice the uppercase characters and the colons which are necessary. You cannot have filenames including a path or a drive letter, in that case, use a batchfile.

Q:
I cant get priority mail to work, what am I doing wrong?

A:
There are several possible causes...
1. You have not the appropriate access level (priority mail or postmaster)
2. The priority functions are not activated in the system setup
3. You spell (priority mail) instead of (priority)
4. No default domain is selected.
5. The return address in your mail-client is not correct. This address must contain a name and domain which can be found in the Mailcoach host and user database.
6. The mail-client sends the POP account instead of E-mail-name with the command "MAIL FROM". This applies to Earlier Pegaus version for example. The solution for this is to use the same name for POP account and E-mail name in both Mailcoach and Pegasus
7. Your mail clients doesn't support Priority mail. An example is MS Exchange client. Use (priority) in your subject line instead.

Q:
Why does outgoing mail disappear?

A:
The most common cause is that the mail-client return address is incorrect. Both the name and domain must exist in Mailcoach, otherwise the mail is moved to \spool directory instead of \spool\[host]

Solution
1. Make sure the syntax is correct: "name@domain.com"
2. Make sure the name exists in Mailcoach user database and the correct domain is selected.
3. If you need to have a different return address, this can still be used, as long as the syntax is correct, and a primary domain exists in the hosts setup.

Q:
Mailcoach refuse to dial, whats wrong?

A:
This is usually caused by phone number combinations or lengths that windows TAPI (telephone routines in Win95 & NT4) doesn't recognize as valid.

SolutionEnter the number in canonical form i.e. +1 (781) 280-4221this usually solves the problem.

Q:
When starting Mailcoach after a successful install and setup, I get error 5 and Mailcoach is terminated, why?

A:
Applies to Windows NT3.51 and 4.0

The directory name which Mailcoach is installed in may not contain a space character. This is a bug in NT

SolutionUninstall Mailcoach and reinstall in a directory without space character in the name.

Q:
How can I optimize transfer speed with UUCP?

A:
A normal transfer speed should be apx 1100 - 1600 bytes/sec for a 14.4K modem and apx the double for 28.8K modem. ISDN 64, apx 6-8K/sec.Mailcoach presents the average speed while transferring and receiving. This speed is not accurate unless the mail sent is at least 100K.
Optimizing Try increasing the package size and number of windows. These settings does only affect the receiving speed but if you get good results, you should contact your ISP and get them to use the same settings in their end.

Common causes to bad performance
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif If you often send large attachments and/or the physical distance to your ISP is long, these settings can have great impact. Don't select too large windows, using 4096 when you seldom send large attachments or messages above this size, will be a waste of bandwidth as this size is always sent, regardless of the actual size of the message.
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif A slow machine in combination with small amount of memory will drastically affect performance, a 486/33 running Windows95 with 8 Mb memory is not enough. Using 16 Mb memory can double the throughput.
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif Check that you have hardware handshake (RTS/CTS) and not Xon/Xoff.
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif The Speed between the PC and modem should be 115200 if 28.8K modem and at least 57600 if 14.4K.
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif Make sure that modem compression is activated.
images/mailcoach22000090000.gif Having the UUCP advanced and command -log activated will also affect the throughput drastically.

StatisticsIf none of suggestions above makes any difference, analyze your uucp.log - file which is located in the \mcmain\logs directory.

After each transport, statistics are presented. If these show waste amount of re-send and errors, the cause can be bad telephone lines or some error on your modem. Of course, the modem configuration can also be wrong.

UUCP via TCP/IP
The
g protocol is not very well suited for using UUCP via TCP/IP. In Mailcoach this will usually result in transfer speeds of just 80-90% of the theoretical speed. If possible, use the 't' protocol instead as this is much more efficient over TCP/IP
